What are potential causes of tachycardia? After an intensive work out or exercise, it’s normal for a person to experience palpitations and fast heart rate. Caffeine intake can also be a culprit. However, if someone is at rest and is still experiencing these symptoms they may be showing tachycardia symptoms.
What is Tachycardia?
Cardiac arrhythmia is a heart condition that causes an unusual rhythm of the heartbeat. It has two categories: bradycardia and tachycardia. Bradycardia definition is a disorder wherein the heart beats slower than the normal heart rate. As opposed to bradycardia, tachycardia is an ailment wherein the heart beats faster than the usual.
Common Symptoms of Tachycardia
Tachycardia is also known as a swift heart. With this heart problem, oxygen is being denied from the body tissues and organs. The common symptoms include:
- Chest Pain
- Shortness of Breath
Different Types of Tachycardia
- Atrial Fibrillation – It is the most common type of tachycardia. The fluctuating electrical impulses of the heart’s atria causes an irregular heart rate. In a case study by The American Journal of Medicine entitled History of Thyroid Disorders in Relation to Clinical Outcomes in Atrial Fibrillation, it is said that hyperthyroid patients are likely to develop this heart condition.
- Ventricular Fibrillation – The root of this problem is from the heart’s lower chambers. The chambers rapidly contract causing the heart to pump little to no blood. The interrupted blood flow can lead to cardiac arrest.
- Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome – Extra muscle tissue forms inside the blood chambers causing blood flow disruption. It is triggered when the patient gets overly anxious or emotionally stressed. Hyperthyroid patients are likely to develop this if their anxiety attacks are left untreated.
Eliminate the Tachycardia Risk Factors
There are several habits and exercises to help manage tachycardia complications:
- Moderate caffeine intake – Coffee can indeed help us be more productive. However, try to limit yourself to a maximum of 3 cups per day. Caffeine increases the metabolic rate of our body which makes matters worse for hyperthyroid patients.
- Regularly check your cholesterol levels – Too much cholesterol can clog the arteries. This can also lead to hypertension. Avoid saturated and trans fats and consume more vegetables and fruits.
- Exercise – Work it! Anxiety and stress provoke heart problems such as tachycardia. Having an outlet relieves stress. Choose less strenuous activities such as yoga or tai chi.
- Quit smoking – Nicotine can cause damage to the lining of the arteries in the heart. Smoking also has the tendency to elevate blood pressure and the risk of blood clots. In severe cases, it can lead to angina, heart attack and stroke.
Consult Your Cardiologist for Tachycardia
If you seem to experience tachycardia symptoms, get yourself checked with your trusted cardiologist. Your doctor will most likely have you take an electrocardiogram (ECG). This test measures the heart’s electrical impulses which determine its internal electrical system’s status. Depending on your overall health condition, additional tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and coronary angiogram may be necessary.
Heart discomfort can have a lot of possible causes. To be sure whether or not it is tachycardia, consult your cardiologist. Prescribed medications lessen the chances of complications.
