Who is Margaret Laws?

Margaret Laws is the CEO of Hopelab, a social innovation lab that is focused on improving the wellbeing and health of teens and young adults. Hopelab works with governmental organizations as well as for-profit and nonprofit organizations. At the Hopelab, Margaret Laws leads a multidisciplinary team to improve the lives of others.

Margaret Laws has spent 17 years at the California HealthCare Foundation and she founded the CHCF Health Innovation Fund before starting with Hopelab. According to Margaret Laws, it is extremely important to be able to help people to connect and collaborate with organizations in Hopelab.

With the difficult times we are all having these days due to a pandemic, it’s important to support each other and get over these anxious days together.

How To Support Each Other? hopelab

Margaret Laws has mentioned the importance of the cultivation of resilience. Hopelab focuses on 3 elements – purpose, connection, and control.

  • Purpose; having a long-term steady goal or something that has a great meaning can give us a feeling of purpose. When we are doing something on purpose we are more likely to adopt positive habits and take on challenges more effectively.
  • Connection; meaningful and strong connections with others are important. Such connections can help us live happier and healthier lives.
  • Control; it’s the feeling of what we do matters and that we can accomplish the goals we set out for ourselves.

According to Margaret Laws, being able to help those we care about to boost resilience can help them and us to benefit from this process both psychologically and physically.

Helping those we care about is important for us as well. “Act of Kindness” movement has powerful health benefits for both the helper and the receiver. Reaching out to loved ones and really listening to what they have to say is extremely important. It can establish a feeling of connection and belonging. Helping our loved ones to set goals can give them a sense of control and empowerment.

Margaret Laws says that she practices a “5-minute journal” every morning where she writes 3 things that she’s grateful for to remind herself that no matter how challenging a day has been, there are people and things around all of us that can comfort us.

Set Intentions hopelab

Setting intentions and writing 3 of them down and completing these intentions during the day can give you the feeling of accomplishment. Being able to control your day and having intention can boost your confidence.

Practice Self-Compassion

Margaret Laws says “treat yourself as you’d treat a friend” and this practice can give you an inner critique that can be transformational.

Reach Out

Checking up on friends and family members can mean so much to those people. Instead of waiting for them to call you first and ask help, it’s better to call them and check with them.

If you’re feeling anxious yourself there are different meditation apps that you can try, says Margaret Laws. Spending time in nature, listening to music, or practicing an activity that can help you feel inspired can also help you deal with your anxiety.

“I’m inspired by the work of Hopelab adviser Sonja Lyubomirsky connecting prosocial acts with happiness and better health outcomes.

The movement I’d suggest is doing acts of kindness for others. Even small acts can benefit the physical and mental wellbeing of both the giver and receiver. The moment we’re in is presenting opportunities for all of us to help support others, and in doing so, help ourselves emerge stronger and more resilient.” says Margaret Laws.

Learning how to support each other during difficult times is important for everyone. With the tips shared by Margaret Laws of Hopelab, we hope our readers can deal with stressful situations better.
